What is an OAE Test?
Otoacoustic Emission (OAE) testing
is an advanced, non-invasive, objective hearing test which measures the
functional health of the inner ear, including the cochlea. It identifies sounds
called otoacoustic emissions caused by the movement of tiny hair cells to
auditory stimulation. These sounds can be passed from the cochlea to the middle
and then to the outer ear and recorded with other sensitive devices.
OAE testing is a non-intrusive,
pain-free, and simple examination for subjects incapable of functional
participation in standard hearing tests (e.g., newborns, children, and
unresponsive patients).
Our OAE Tests We Provide
In Mukund Hearing Solutions, we
perform two major forms of evoked OAEs:
● Transient-Evoked OAEs (TEOAEs):
Measure the emissions released from sounds that are brief, such as clicks or
tone bursts.
● Distortion Product OAEs (DPOAEs):
Measure the emissions from the ear upon being stimulated by two continuous
tones.
These tests allow us to establish
sensorineural hearing loss and conductive hearing problems resulting from fluid
or blockage in the middle ear.
How the OAE Test is Conducted
● Minimal intervention consists of the
insertion of a small probe into the ear canal.
● Soft sounds are generated by the
probe.
● The device reads the reaction of the
inner ear.
● Results are disclosed as
"Pass" or "Refer", where "Refer" is further
evaluation.
The test usually does not take more
than a few minutes and is not based on any preparation.
